Blood Color

"The Chemistry of The Colours of Blood." Compound Interest. Compound Interest, 28 Oct. 2014. Web. 11 Dec. 2014. <http://www.compoundchem.com/2014/10/28/coloursofblood/>. It's an interesting article about how blood is different colors in different animals based on the components and what makes up a blood cell. Thus if someone were to put the blood of a fish in front of the Hematology Technician, they would be able to tell that the blood does not belong to a human.

Blood Vessel

"Blood Vessel." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2014. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_vessel>. This is a great picture of blood vessels, the artery and the vein. Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Veins carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues to the heart. This is what our blood flows through, creating blood pressure by how much force is exerted on the vessel walls and this is where blood is drawn from for donation or testing. (wikipedia was only used for the photo).

Donate Blood

"Donating Blood." American Red Cross. Red Cross, n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2014. <http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood>. This site gives all the facts about blood donation. It describes the process and the benefits. It also talks about platelet donation and what you need to do in order to donate. Blood donation is a great cause and this site helps answer questions.

CDC

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11 Aug. 2011. Web. 12 Dec. 2014. <http://www.cdc.gov/bloodsafety/>.This is the main CDC page for blood. It has links that will take you to other pages on the CDC to learn about Blood Safety, Diseases and Organisms, and a Resource Library. All of which is important and relevant to a hematologist.

Bachelor's Option

"What Is a Medical Laboratory Scientist?" What Is a Medical Laboratory Scientist? The University of Kansas Medical Center, n.d. Web. 11 Dec. 2014. . This site explains what a medical laboratory scientist/technologist is, (which is different than a medical technician). An ML Scientist has a bachelor's in the field and therefore not only knows more about the MLT and their specialty, but also earns more. So if possible, it is good to go back to school and earn a bachelor's, and some programs have it so you can get your bachelor's in 2 years while you complete the clinical part where you are already employed as a Medical Lab Technician.

Having seen one myself during a job shadow, this image reminded me of the laboratory at Harrisburg Hospital. The lab is a big place with stations for each specialty and within each specialty area, is more stations with machinery and stations that are catered to each specialty.

ASCLS

Home. Epower, n.d. Web. 30 Nov. 2014. <http://www.ascls.org/>. This is the website for Clinical Lab Tech/Scientists. A person can join this group through a fee and completion of the exam that must be passed in order to become and MLT/ Hematology Tech. Case Study

ASCLS. Clinical Lab Investigations: Case Studies for the Laboratory Professional-Transient Erythoblastopenia of Childhood. N.p.: ASCLS, 2013. Quiz Case Study. This is a quiz for the laboratory professional. It is a great example at what happens after the blood is sent to the lab. In this case study/quiz, the symptoms experienced are given, the age and sex of the child, the history, and the tests run. Also given are the results of the test and what that means. It is the goal of the person reading the case study to determine what is wrong and the accurately determine what the results mean. The answer is not given in the file, it must be purchased by the student for credit. But this is a great example of the process from going to the doctor for a problem, getting certain laboratory tests done and what it could mean.
